2024 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship semifinalists Dentil Praia Clube were knocked out of the top of the standings of the 2024-2025 Brazilian Women’s Superliga on Tuesday, with a surprising defeat to relegation-threatened Flor de Ypê Paulistano Barueri.

The teams met on the last day of matches of the fourth leg of the second round of the regular season at the José Corrêa Arena, in Barueri, and the home team recovered from a first-set loss to come back and prevail 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 32-30, 25-10).

The Barueri team was founded and is managed by Brazil national team head coach José ‘Zé Roberto’ Guimarães, who also served as the team’s head coach from 2016 and 2023. Their roster is mainly formed by youth Brazilian national team players and young prospects in the country.

Celebrating back-to-back victories, Barueri, who had topped SESC RJ Flamengo on the road last week, moved two spots up in the standings, leaving the relegation zone and now appearing in ninth place, one spot below the playoff qualification zone, with 13 points (five wins, ten losses).

Praia stagnated at 35 points (14 wins, two losses) and were passed by SESI Vôlei Bauru, who defeated Abel Moda Vôlei 3-1 (25-10, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21) on Monday and got to 36 (12 wins, three losses). They could also be passed by defending champions Gerdau Minas, but the defending champions fell 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-14, 26-24) to Unilife Maringá Vôlei on Tuesday and continued with 33 points (12 wins, three losses).

The top scorer and best player in Barueri’s victory over Flamengo one week ago, 24-year-old opposite Jheovana Emanuele was in top form again, producing a match-high 30 points, with 26 kills, three blocks and one ace, and was awarded the match’s MVP award for the second time in a week.

“We’ve been working very hard to change things,” she said. “And we can tell we’re a different team now. We see that every day at practice and also during the matches. Our work is paying off, but we want to improve even more because there are still many tough matches ahead of us.”

Barueri’s middle blockers also had a major impact in the match, combining for 27 points – Brazilian national team member Luzia Nezzo scored 14, with eight kills, five blocks and one ace, while 24-year-old Lanna Machado tallied another 13, with eight kills, four blocks and one ace.

Praia got 12 points (all in kills) from American outside hitter Payton Caffrey and another 11 (five blocks, four kills and two aces) from Olympic champion middle blocker Adenízia Ferreira.

“We’ll watch the match again and figure out what went wrong on our side, but we have to congratulate Barueri,” said star setter Macris Carneiro. “They played very well, kept us under pressure during the entire time and we couldn’t really find a way out of it. We need to prepare to do better in the upcoming matches.”

Barueri will return to action on Sunday, when they face Minas. On Monday, Praia will try to return to winning ways against Pinheiros.
