Sir’s Oleh Plotnytskyi in attack against Trentino’s three-man block

A big weekend ahead in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca will feature as many as three high-profile match-ups between teams from the top seven in the current standings, highlighted by a top-caliber clash between reigning club world and European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia and defending Italian champions Itas Trentino Trento on Sunday. The 18th leg of regular season action will offer another four games on Sunday, January 25, and one on Saturday, January 24.

Sir Susa Scai Perugia will host Itas Trentino Trento at the Barton Energy hall on Sunday at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC). The Block Devils top the table on 44 points and a 15-2 win-loss record. Trentino are two spots below them, in third place on 39 and 13-4. Sir are riding the wave of an impressive 18-match winning streak across all competitions, while the team from Trento lost three of their last four matches. When they met one another in November, however, Trentino scored a four-set home victory to improve to a 33-25 lead in the all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs.

“Like every time against Trento, it will be a tough, tough match! And we expect a great game of the highest level. We're preparing for this match and we hope it will be a great evening!” Wassim Ben Tara, opposite of Sir Susa Scai Perugia

The leg will serve off on Saturday at 21:00 (20:00) with a game between Valsa Group Modena and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza at the Panini hall in Modena. The two teams are neighbors in the table, standing fifth on 34 and 11-6, and fourth on 35 and 11-6, respectively, so the result of the match could potentially prompt them to change their places. When they met in a SuperLega match in October, Modena celebrated a four-set win on the road, but Gas Sales got back at them in December’s Italy Cup quarterfinals, when they knocked out their opponents also after a four-set duel.

Sunday’s competition day will also open with a clash between neighbors in the playoff zone of the standings. Allianz Milan will welcome Cucine Lube Civitanova to the Allianz Cloud at 16:00 (15:00). This one, however, cannot result in a direct place switch as Lube are in sixth place on 31 and 10-7, five points above Allianz, who stand seventh on 26 and 9-8. The season’s first encounter between the two teams in Civitanova Marche produced a five-set battle, in which the home team celebrated a tie-breaker victory.

The remaining three matches will all start at the same time, 18:00 (17:00) on Sunday.

Second-placed Rana Verona will play on the road, visiting second-from-the-bottom Cisterna Volley. Verona are running two points behind leaders Sir, on 42 and 15-2, while Cisterna stand in 11th place on 11 and 4-13. In December, Verona took out Cisterna in straight sets at home.

Vero Volley Monza will try to keep their place within the playoff zone as they visit MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo on Sunday. Vero Volley stand eighth on 15 and 5-12, while the SuperLega rookies are two positions below them, in 10th place on 12 and 3-14. October’s game between them in Monza went 3-1 the way of the home team.

Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina are stuck at the bottom of the table, in 12th place on 4 and 1-16, and are gradually running out of time to do something about their survival in the league. They will entertain Sonepar Padova Padua at the Savelli hall on Sunday and have their backs against the wall to use it as an opportunity to narrow the distance to the teams right above them. Padova are one of those teams. They are in ninth place on 13 and 5-12, with a good shot at making the quarterfinals, and will also see that game as an opportunity to stay in contention for the playoffs, while distancing themselves from the threat of relegation. They beat Grottazzolina in four sets at home in November.
