Despite another top-caliber performance from Lube’s Bulgarian star outside hitter Aleksandar Nikolov, Vero Volley shocked their visitors with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14) victory. It was only the team’s second win in 10 matches played since the start of the season and it helped them push further away from the bottom of the table, up to 10th place on 7 points and a 2-8 win-loss record. Meanwhile, last season’s silver medalists from Civitanova Marche dropped to fifth place in the current standings on 17 and 5-4. They have been perfect at home this season, but playing on the road has been a struggle.

German outside Erik Rohrs led Vero Volley’s scorers with 17 points, including six kill blocks. His Bulgarian cross-court teammate Martin Atanasov contributed another 15 points. Hungarian opposite Krisztian Padar (three aces, two blocks) and middle blocker Thomas Beretta (two aces, three blocks) also reached the double digits on the winners’ side, with a total of 14 and 10 points, respectively, while the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to libero Leonardo Scanferla. Aleksandar Nikolov was by far the best scorer of the match. The Bulgarian talent nailed five aces and raised three kill blocks towards a match-high 26 points for Lube.

“We're on the right track. This was our best performance of the season,” Vero Volley’s middle blocker Leandro Mosca said. “Thanks to the work we're doing, with the right mentality and approach, we can achieve great results.”

The other four SuperLega games on Wednesday were all decided in straight sets.

With a match-high 16 points to his name, including three aces and two blocks, outside Alessandro Michieletto led defending champions Itas Trentino Trento to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) home win over Valsa Group Modena in the highest-profile encounter of the day. Trentino kept their third place, now on 21 and 7-2, while Modena descended a spot to sixth on 16 and 5-4.

Table leaders Sir Susa Scai Perugia lived up to their standing as they visited table trailers Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina and mastered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) shutout to improve to 26 and 9-2 in first place. Winless Grottazzolina remained stuck in 12th on 1 and 0-9. Tunisian opposite Wassim Ben Tara led the Block Devils with 12 points, while the home team’s outside Giulio Magalini topped the match chart with 16.

Second-placed Rana Verona stayed close to the top of the table with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) sweep of their home game against Cisterna Volley and pushed the opponents down to second place from the bottom. Verona are still the team with the fewest number of losses in the SuperLega so far this season, standing on 23 and 8-1, having played two matches fewer than Sir. Cisterna dropped to 11th place on 6 and 3-6. Slovenian outside Rok Mozic top-scored 15 points towards Verona’s victory.

With 21-year-old opposite Alessandro Bovolenta leading the way with three aces and three kill blocks towards a match-high 17 points, Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza hammered out a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-18) home victory over Sonepar Padova Padua and climbed two positions up to fourth place on 18 and 6-3. Padova are fourth from the bottom, in ninth place on 8 and 3-6.

At the end of the day, another three teams – Gas Sales, Lube and Modena – secured their spots in the Italy Cup quarterfinals, joining already qualified Sir, Verona and Trentino and leaving just two vacancies up for grabs.

The last match of the ninth leg, between MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo and Allianz Milan, will be played on Thursday at 20:45 (19:45). The 10th leg will follow from Saturday to Monday, December 6 to 8.
