French opposite Theo Faure was on fire in Itas Trentino Trento’s home win over Sir Susa Scai Perugia on Sunday. In front of a sold-out house of four thousand spectators, he contributed a match-high 29 points towards the defending Italian champions’ 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 27-29, 25-23) victory over the reigning European champions, handing them their second (consecutive) loss since the start of the season. Faure fired three aces, raised three kill blocks and spiked at a 58% success rate to earn the match’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Another four Trentino players reached the double digits in scoring – outside hitters Alessandro Michieletto with 16 and Spain’s Jordi Ramon with 14, and middle blockers Bela Bartha of Romania with 11 and Flavio Gualberto of Brazil with 10. Argentinean middle Agustin Loser was Sir’s best scorer with 13 points, including three blocks and two aces. Outside hitters Kamil Semeniuk of Poland and Oleh Plotnytskyi of Ukraine added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Trentino climbed a spot up the table to third place on 15 points and a 5-2 win-loss record, while Sir dropped a spot to second place on 17 and 6-2. The participants in next month’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil have played one more game than their rivals.
“It was a match full of intensity, and I think we started it off well, with focus and adrenaline,” Faure commented. “We also saw, at the end of the third set, that with commitment and willpower, a match is never over, but there's always a chance to get back in the game. Mental toughness and a great deal of focus were the foundation for us to return to the court at our best during the fourth set and take home the victory. I'm happy to have earned my second consecutive MVP title, especially in front of our fans, who made the atmosphere magical and supported us through the tough times.”
Rana Verona took advantage of the opportunity to reclaim the top of the standings with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) sweep of their home game against Vero Volley Monza.
