The most anticipated match of the second leg in the Italian SuperLega Credem Banca did not disappoint and offered a high-caliber five-set battle. Last season’s bronze medalists Sir Susa Scai Perugia delighted their fans with a win over silver medalists Cucine Lube Civitanova in their season’s home opener on Sunday evening, one of six SuperLega matches played over the weekend.

Sir Susa Scai Perugia’s Tunisian opposite Wassim Ben Tara contributed a team-high 19 points towards a 3-2 (25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-11) home victory over Cucine Lube Civitanova. He put away two kill blocks and an ace, and registered a 62% success rate in attack. Argentinean middle blocker Agustin Loser spiked at an 85% success rate and raised three kill blocks to finish with 14 points. His cross-court teammate Roberto Russo scored at 80% of his swings and also put up three kill blocks to finish with 11 points, while the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to Polish outside hitter Kamil Semeniuk, who chipped in with 13 points and was particularly useful in the deciding fifth set. Lube’s Bulgarian outside Aleksandar Nikolov hammered out a match-high 21 points, including two aces and a block. After the end of the second leg, Sir occupy the third place in the current standings with 5 points and a 2-0 win-loss record, while Lube are in sixth on 4 and 1-1.
In another high-profile clash on Sunday, Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza celebrated their first win of the new season, a 3-1 (28-26, 14-25, 25-17, 25-18) home victory over Allianz Milan to improve to 3 and 1-1 and take seventh place in the table, a point above eighth-placed Allianz. Opposite Alessandro Bovolenta led the winners with a match-high 28 points, one more than the visitors’ most prolific scorer, Belgian opposite Ferre Reggers.
SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo wrote some history by achieving the club’s first ever win in Italy’s top division. They mastered a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-19) sweep of their home game against Cisterna Volley and rose to fourth in the standings on 4 and 1-1, while their opponents trail bottom, in 12th place on 0 and 0-2. French opposite Nathan Feral topped the charts with 14 points for the winners, spiking at a 60% success rate and firing two aces.
Defending champions Itas Trentino Trento maintained their perfect start with another straight-set win, shutting out Sonepar Padova Padua in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 28-26) sweep at home to top the table on 6 and 2-0. Their Spanish outside Jordi Ramon was the best scorer of the match with 19 points, including three aces and a block. He also achieved a 68% success rate in offense. Padova are now in ninth place on 2 and 1-1.
Rana Verona also claimed their second three-point win to occupy the second place in the table. This time on the road, they shut out Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina by 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-20). Brazilian opposite Darlan Souza fired four aces and put up two kill blocks to share the top scorer honors with teammate Rok Mozic with 13 points apiece. The Slovenian outside’s tally included one ace and one block. Mozic and Darlan signed off with success rates in attack of 65% and 58%, respectively. Grottazzolina stand second from the bottom, in 11th place on 0 and 0-2.
One more straight-setter was produced in Valsa Group Modena’s home game against Vero Volley Monza. With three kill blocks, two aces and a 71% success rate in attack, Modena’s Austrian opposite Paul Buchegger contributed a match-high total of 20 points towards his team’s 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 26-24) victory that put them in fifth place on 4 and 1-1. Vero Volley are 10th on 0 and 0-2.
The third leg will take place midweek, with five games on Wednesday, October 29, and one on Thursday, October 30.
