With only four legs remaining through the end of the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca regular season, some important questions are already finding their answers. Before this weekend’s matches of the 19th leg, the first seven teams in the current standings have already booked their spots in the quarterfinal playoffs, but the fierce race for better positions in the playoff grid among them continues. This weekend will even offer two head-to-head clashes between members of those top seven. Meanwhile, one quarterfinal vacancy is still up for grabs and even the relegation issue has not been completely settled yet.

In one of the match-ups between top-seven teams, Valsa Group Modena will host Allianz Milan at the Panini hall on Sunday, February 1, 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC). Modena are fourth in the table on 36 points and a 12-6 win-loss record, while Allianz are in seventh place on 29 and 10-8. The two teams produced a hard-fought five-set battle, including a set that went 37-35, when they met in Milan during the first half of the regular season and it was the home team that celebrated victory at the end of the tie-breaker.
At the same time, in the other high-level duel, Rana Verona will welcome Cucine Lube Civitanova to the Agsm AIM. Verona are aiming high this season, even with the first place in target. They are currently running second on 45 and 16-2, just two points behind the table leaders. On-and-off Lube have generally been performing under par and now stand in sixth place on 31 and 10-8, only two points above Allianz. While Verona stand out as the favorites in this game, when they visited Civitanova Marche in November, they suffered a straight-set shutout.
The 19th leg will open with the only match to be played on Saturday, January 31. Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina will entertain Vero Volley Monza at the Savelli hall. The match will serve off at 18:00 (17:00). These two also delivered a five-set thriller, when they met in Monza in December, with Vero Volley winning the tie-breaker by 18-16. Now, the two sides have completely different goals in mind. The home team seems doomed to relegation as it is stuck at the bottom of the table, in 12th place on 5 and 1-17, but at least mathematically, it still has a shot at survival in the league. Mathematically, even eighth-placed Vero Volley are not completely safe from relegation yet, but their goal is actually to stay in that eighth place, which brings a playoff spot with it. The squad from Monza now stands on 16 and 5-13, just a point clear of ninth-placed Sonepar Padova Padua.
Also aiming at that eighth place, Sonepar Padova Padua will have a difficult task this weekend. In one of Sunday’s opening matches, they will take on reigning club world and European champions and SuperLega table leaders Sir Susa Scai Perugia. The game will start at 17:00 (16:00) at the Kioene Arena in Padua. Padova stand on 15 and 6-12 in ninth place, while Sir are two points clear at the top, on 47 and 16-2. In October, Sir put together a straight-set sweep of their home game against Padova.
At the same time on Sunday, defending champions Itas Trentino Trento will host SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo at the BTS Arena. Trentino are running in third place on 39 and 13-5, six points from the second place and three points from the fourth. Meanwhile, Cuneo are third from the bottom, in 10th place on 14 and 4-14, just two points from the playoff zone. Cuneo managed to take one set away from Trentino, when they hosted them in November.
Also on Sunday, at 18:00 (17:00), Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will entertain Cisterna Volley at Banca Sport hall. Gas Sales are fifth on 36 and 11-7. Cisterna are the team most threatened by relegation, should Grottazzolina start collecting points in their effort to avoid it. They stand second from the bottom, in 11th place on 11 and 4-14. December’s match between Cisterna and Gas Sales went 3-1 the way of the visitors from Piacenza.
