Reigning national champions Itas Trentino Trento are aiming at winning the Coppa Italia trophy for the first time since 2013. In fact, they have won the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship more times (five) in the club’s history than they have the Italy Cup with three trophies from that competition. To qualify for their 17th consecutive Coppa Italia semifinal, Trentino mastered a straight-set sweep of their home quarterfinal against Vero Volley Monza in late December. On Saturday in Casalecchio di Reno, they persevered through a tough five-set battle to edge past Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza. For Trentino, it will be the 10th national cup final in the club’s history. Currently, the team from Trento is running third in the SuperLega Credem Banca table on 42 points and a 14-5 win-loss record.

“We played great volleyball, but above all, we showed a great heart, which is a key factor in winning matches,” commented Trentino’s head coach Marcelo Mendez after the semifinals. “We were very efficient in blocking and defense, and in the correlation of these two elements, despite not producing many kill blocks. I'm happy with the team's performance because all the players showed great character to qualify for the final, which we're already thinking about. We'll give it our all and try to win with everything we have.”

Rana Verona have never won the cup before. Last season, they reached the final for the first time in the club’s history. This season, they scored a straight-set home win in their quarterfinal against Allianz Milan to progress to the Final Four near Bologna. In the semifinals on Saturday, Verona mastered an emphatic clean sweep of their encounter with reigning club world and European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia. The team is running second in the SuperLega on 45 and 16-3.

“This result was a surprise for me,” Verona’s American setter Micah Christenson commented after the team’s convincing victory in the semis. “It's difficult to beat Perugia 3-0, and above all, we were very good at blocking. Now we hope to learn from last year's loss. It's great fun to have such good attacking teammates, but we have to focus on the final right now, not just mentally, but also physically.”

The all-time head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 36-15 in wins, heavily in favor of Trentino. The last two encounters earlier this season in the SuperLega, however, were both won by Verona. In November, Verona celebrated a four-set home victory, and in January, they outlasted the opponent in a five-set battle in Trento. The last time the two clubs met in national cup competition was back in January 2024, when Trentino shut out Verona in the quarterfinals.
