Roberto Russo

Just days after Simone Giannelli extended his contract with Italy’s Sir Susa Vim Perugia, another member of the Italian national team 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championship gold-medal squad did the same. 26-year-old middle blocker Roberto Russo signed with the reigning two-time club world champions for another two seasons.

Roberto Russo joined Sir in 2019, arriving from Consar Ravenna, when he was 22 years old, and he is currently into his fifth season with the club. Since his arrival, the club has won two FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship titles, two Coppa Italia and four Supercoppa Italiana trophies. The team from Perugia has already collected one of each of these trophies this season alone, and is well in contention for the national title, currently running second in the SuperLega Credem Banca regular season standings.

The 2.05m-tall athlete has been a member of the Italian national team since 2018 and contributed to the 2022 World Championship title, the 2023 CEV European Championship silver and the 2018 Mediterranean Games gold.

“I am very happy with the trust the club places in me,” Russo told sirsafetyperugia.it. “It is my third renewal here. Perugia is now a second home for me. I feel good about the environment, about the club and I hope to continue the path in the best way, bringing in more trophies with my teammates. For me as a player it is very important to feel that a club of Perugia's level, among the best in the world, has respect and consideration for me.

“I have grown and matured a lot in recent years, improving technically and, above all, as a person. It's part of life's journey. I'm lucky enough to do it in one of the cities with the best fans. Everywhere we go our fans are there, they push us to do our best, they help us in difficulties... Let's all move forward united as we still have so much satisfaction to gain together!”
