The men’s volleyball PlusLiga regular season in Poland is coming to an end on Monday. The upcoming full leg – formally 14th by number, but chronologically the last one – will answer the main question pending about who will book the last two available spots in the playoffs. The candidates still in contention are down to three: JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj, ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle and Energa Trefl Gdansk. The exact lineup in the playoff bracket with the teams’ positions will also be finalized as the seven matches of the leg unfold from Saturday, March 21, to Monday, March 23.

ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle will be the first candidate for a quarterfinal vacancy to hit the court this weekend. On Saturday, at 14:45 local time (13:45 UTC), they will visit leaders Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie. ZAKSA are just above the cut-off for the playoffs in the current standings, in eighth place on 39 points and a 12-13 win-loss record. Bringing home one point, or two sets won, from Zawiercie would suffice for booking a quarterfinal spot. Aluron, on the other hand, are holding first place on 59 and 20-5, and are untouchable at the top with a safely secured pole position for the playoffs.

Then, the next contender JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj will have a tough home game against trending Indykpol AZS Olsztyn. The match is on Sunday at 14:45 (13:45). By then, last year’s regular season winners may have already qualified for the quarterfinals, if ZAKSA did not get that coveted point on the previous day, as Jastrzebski Wegiel are in seventh place on 39 and 14-11. Otherwise, one point, or two sets won against their visitors from Olsztyn would stamp Jastrzebski Wegiel’s ticket to the playoffs. Indykpol, on the other hand, cannot fall below the fifth place they currently occupy on 46 and 16-9, but will aim to move higher in order to secure a home-court advantage in the quarterfinals.

Finally, if at least one of ZAKSA and Jastrzebski Wegiel has not guaranteed themselves a playoff berth by then, on Monday, Energa Trefl Gdansk will have a shot at doing so as they visit Barkom Kazhany Lviv in Elblag for the closing match of the regular season, serving off at 17:30 (16:30). Trefl are below the red line, in ninth place on 36 and 13-12. If either ZAKSA or Jastrzebski Wegiel do not earn a point over the weekend, a 3-0 or a 3-1 victory over the Ukrainian team would send Trefl to the quarterfinals. Barkom Kazhany are in the comfort zone between the playoff scuffle and the relegation spot, in 11th place on 24 and 8-17. They cannot move up, but they can move down by a spot or two.

Three teams are in the race for the runner-up position in the final regular season standings. PGE Projekt Warsaw, currently second on 51 and 18-7, will visit rookies InPost ChKS Chelm at the MOSiR hall on Saturday at 17:30 (16:30), and any victory would cement them in second place. Chelm are 13th on 23 and 7-18.

Third-placed defending champions BOGDANKA LUK Lublin, on 50 and 17-8, will entertain already relegated Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa at the Globus right after that, at 20:00 (19:00) on Saturday evening. Steam trail bottom, in 14th place on 17 and 4-21.

Asseco Resovia Rzeszow will then welcome Slepsk Malow Suwalki to the Podpromie hall on Sunday at 17:30 (16:30). By then, they may or may not have a shot at moving up or the risk of moving down from the fourth place, which they occupy on 48 and 17-8 – two points below BOGDANKA and two points above Indykpol. Slepsk Malow are certain to finish in 10th place, where they are currently located on 28 and 8-17.

The last team that booked its spot in the playoffs, PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow, cannot move up from the sixth place, which they are holding on 41 and 14-11, but could potentially fall all the way down to eighth place unless they gain a point or two from their home game against Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski. The match at the Energia hall is on Sunday at 20:00 (19:00). Cuprum Stilon stand 12th on 24 and 7-18.
