The 22nd leg of the Polish PlusLiga regular season will start on Thursday, January 23, and spread over five consecutive days, to Monday, January 27. In the most interesting of the eight matches the programme has to offer, Asseco Resovia Rzeszow will host PGE Projekt Warsaw on Saturday.

The game between Asseco Resovia Rzeszow and PGE Projekt Warsaw is the only clash between two top-eight teams this weekend. The hosts are seventh in the current standings on 34 points and a 10-11 win-loss record, while the visitors from the capital are in second place on 49 and 18-3. They will open Saturday’s PlusLiga programme at 14:45 local time (13:45 UTC).

The two clubs have previously met 48 times in the PlusLiga. Resovia lead the head-to-head series by 29-19 in wins. However, Projekt won the three most recent encounters, including October’s five-set battle they put up in Warsaw during the first half of the regular season, when the winners’ middle blocker Jakub Kochanowski was named Most Valuable Player of the match, while Resovia’s French opposite Stephen Boyer delivered 26 points to emerge as the best scorer.

The PlusLiga “weekend” will serve off on Thursday at 17:30 (16:30) with Nowak-Mosty MKS Bedzin hosting PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow. Nowak-Mosty are one of the teams under a serious threat of relegation. They are second from the bottom, in 15th place on 12 and 3-18. SKRA, on the other hand, are on the edge of the playoff zone, in eighth place on 31 and 10-11. SKRA won the previous match between the two teams in four sets at home.

In the first of two matches on Friday, also at 17:30 (16:30), PSG Stal Nysa will welcome Trefl Gdansk, hoping to repeat their success in the away game in October, when they celebrated a 3-1 victory. The two sides are neighbours in the table, just above the red line for relegation. However, the threat for Stal is a lot more serious, as they stand 13th on 18 and 5-16, while Trefl are another eight points higher, in 12th place on 26 and 8-13.

Indykpol AZS Olsztyn will entertain Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in Friday’s late match, starting at 20:30 (19:30). Aluron beat Indykpol in four sets at home in October. Now they are third in the standings on 49 and 16-5. Indykpol are below the cut-off for the playoffs, but not far from it, in 10th place on 28 and 8-12 with a game in hand.

Defending champions and table leaders Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj will play at home this weekend. On Saturday at 17:30 (16:30), they will take on Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski. Jastrzebski Wegiel top the standings on 54 and 17-4, while Cuprum Stilon are not far from the playoff zone either, in 11th place on 27 and 11-10. The squad from Jastrzebie-Zdroj won the first match in Gorzow Wielkopolski by 3-1.

In Saturday’s late match at 20:30 (19:30), BOGDANKA LUK Lublin will host GKS Katowice after shutting out this opponent on the road in the fall. BOGDANKA are fourth in the standings on 43 and 15-6, while GKS trail bottom, in 16th place on 9 and 3-18.

The only game on Sunday’s programme will be between ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle and Slepsk Malow Suwalki. Placed fifth on 42 and 14-6 with a game in hand, ZAKSA will welcome their opponents, who are just below the line for the playoffs, in ninth place on 29 and 11-10. The hosts will be looking to get back at Slepsk Malow for the five-set defeat they suffered in Suwalki in October. The match will serve off at 14:45 (13:45).

In the leg’s closing game on Monday at 17:30 (16:30), Barkom Kazhany Lviv will entertain Steam Hemarpol Norwid Czestochowa, who will also seek revenge for being shut out at home by the Ukrainian team in the fall. Norwid are running in sixth place on 37 and 13-8, while Barkom are at the top end of the relegation zone, in 14th place on 13 and 5-16.
