As the 18th leg of the men’s volleyball PlusLiga in Poland continued to unfold on Sunday, Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj produced another surprising result by shutting out BOGDANKA LUK Lublin at their venue, the Globus. Just a year ago, such a score would not have been surprising at all, but given that Lublin are the current holders of the PlusLiga title, the Poland Cup crown and the Poland Super Cup trophy, and leaders in the current PlusLiga standings, while Jastrzebski Wegiel were running on the edge of the playoff zone and entered the match on a three-game losing streak in the PlusLiga, their straight-set win in Lublin is quite a shocker.

Jastrzebski Wegiel outplayed BOGDANKA on all scoring counts. Outside hitter Michal Gierzot led the way to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-16) sweep with a match-high 15 points. He spiked 13 at a 59% success rate and added one ace and one kill block to earn the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. His cross-court teammate Nicolas Szerszen finished with 13 points, including two stuffs, while opposite Lukasz Kaczmarek chipped in with another 10 points, also including two in blocking. In the absence of regular opposite Kewin Sasak, two players reached the double digits on Lublin’s side – French outside Hilir Henno with two aces and nine successful swings, and his cross-court teammate Wilfredo Leon with one ace, one kill block and nine kills in attack.

With this result, Jastrzebski Wegiel climbed one position to seventh place in the standings on 28 points and a 10-7 win-loss record, overtaking PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow, who are on 27 and 9-7 with a game in hand. BOGDANKA remained table leaders on 35 and 12-5, separated from second-placed PGE Projekt Warsaw slightly on set ratios. Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie are third on 33 and 11-5, also with a game in hand.

The 18th leg will continue with two more games – one on Monday and one on Tuesday.
