Another three matches of the 20th leg in the men’s volleyball PlusLiga in Poland were played over the weekend. As a result, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie returned to the top of the current standings, while ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle entered the playoff zone of the table.

In the highest-profile match of the weekend, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie put together a hard-fought 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 34-32, 25-22) home win over Asseco Resovia Rzeszow on Saturday to gain three points, with which they climbed back up to the first place that had been taken away from them by PGE Projekt Warsaw earlier in the week. The FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship bronze medalists top the current standings on 42 points and a 14-5 win-loss record, two points clear of Projekt and five clear of defending champions BOGDANKA LUK Lublin. Meanwhile, Resovia dropped to fifth place on 34 and 12-7. Two outside hitters – Aluron’s Aaron Russell of the United States (55% success rate in attack, 1 ace, 1 kill block) and Resovia’s Yacine Louati of France (5 aces, 2 kill blocks) – shared the top scorer honors of the match with 19 points each. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to substitute opposite Bartlomiej Boladz, who was among Aluron’s starters only for sets three and four, but contributed a solid 12 points towards the victory, spiking 10 of them at a 77% success rate in attack.

Also on Saturday, ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle and Energa Trefl Gdansk delivered a five-set battle. The home team from Kedzierzyn-Kozle managed a 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 15-12) victory, enough to move into the playoff zone of the current standings, in eighth place on 28 and 9-10. The team they surpassed, PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow, however, are one point below them, but have two games in hand, standing on 9-8. Trefl kept their sixth place from before the start of the leg, now on 30 and 11-8, with a better set ratio than that of seventh-placed JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj. Italian international opposite Kamil Rychlicki led ZAKSA’s scorers with a team-high 20 points, including two aces and a block. He spiked at a 61% success rate. Belgian outside hitter Igor Grobelny added 17 points, including two blocks and an ace, while the MVP recognition was for ZAKSA’s middle blocker Szymon Jakubiszak, who produced 12 spike kills at an 80% success rate and two stuffs. Trefl’s 22-year-old opposite Aliaksei Nasevich topped the match chart with 33 points, swinging at a 69% success rate and firing four aces.

In Sunday’s only match, Indykpol AZS Olsztyn mastered a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-21) shutout of their hosts Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski and overtook Resovia into fourth place on 36 and 13-5, one point behind third-placed BOGDANKA, but with a game in hand. Cuprum Stilon remain third from the bottom, in 12th place on 18 and 5-14. Czech opposite Jan Hadrava spearheaded Indykpol to the victory with a match-high 20 points, hitting 17 in offense at an 81% success rate and putting away three aces to claim the MVP award.

The last match of the 20th leg, between Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa and PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow, is set to be played on March 11. Meanwhile, PlusLiga action continues with six 21st-leg fixtures to be played this week, from Wednesday, February 11, to Sunday, February 15.
