The lineup for the 2024-2025 PlusLiga semifinals was completed this weekend, after Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, PGE Projekt Warsaw and BOGDANKA LUK Lublin won their quarterfinal series.

Aluron and Projekt Warsaw booked their spots on Saturday, winning each the second match of their respective series, and will meet in the semifinals. Lublin were the last to advance, on Sunday, after they triumphed in a decisive match three, and will meet defending champions JSW Jastrzębski Węgiel, who had already qualified. The semifinals are set to begin on April 19.

In the first match of the weekend, Aluron earned the right of competing in the PlusLiga semifinals for a fourth-straight season in a convincing way, as they swept (27-25, 25-18, 25-18) Asseco Resovia Rzeszów on the road.

The team heavily relied on their outside hitters to triumph, with American Olympic medalist Aaron Russell leading the team with 16 points (12 kills, three aces, one block) and the match’s MVP Bartosz Kwolek adding another 12, with ten kills and two aces. The match’s top scorer was Asseco’s French Olympic champion opposite Stephen Boyer, who registered 17 points, with 13 kills, two blocks and two aces.

“I thought we were a little bit slow at the start of the match, but we were always very focused,” Russell said. “Asseco were fighting for their lives and they tried to press us in the first set, but our blocking and defense were excellent and helped us win in three sets. I think we have been playing very well, but we have some really important matches ahead of us, and we focus on each of them at a time.”

Later on Saturday, Projekt Warsaw secured their spot in the semifinals in more dramatic fashion as they prevailed over PGE GiEK SKRA Bełchatów in a very tight match, winning 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 23-21) on the road after over two and a half hours of play – it will be their second-straight appearance in the Final Four.

Outside hitter Artur Szalpuk led Projekt Warsaw’s scoring efforts again with 23 points (20 kills, two blocks, one ace), but the MVP award went to Olympic medalist middle blocker Jakub Kochanowski, who added 15, with ten kills and five blocks. Iranian star opposite Amin Esmaeilnezhad scored 23 points for SKRA, with 17 kills, four aces and two blocks.

“It was so close,” Szalpuk reacted. “This match could have gone either way and I’m glad that we got to win. We’re as motivated as we can be for the Final Four. I’m happy that we won and managed to end it today because we have a tough schedule ahead of us.”

Lublin beat ZAKSA in match three

Lublin triumphed in the only quarterfinal series that needed all three matches to be decided and will appear in the semifinals for the first time in club history – they joined the Polish elite in 2021-2022. They faced ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle for the third time on Sunday, at home, and repeated what they had done in the second match of the series, winning 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 26-24) to advance.

Star outside hitter Wilfredo Leon and opposite Kewin Sasak led the team offensively with 16 points each, while setter Marcin Komenda earned the match’s MVP award. Returning from a back injury that kept him out of the second match of the series, Polish national team captain and opposite Bartosz Kurek was the duel’s top scorer, with 19 points (15 kills, four blocks) registered for ZAKSA.

Polish Cup Final Four up next

Curiously, before meeting in the Polish League semifinals, the four teams that qualified will compete in the Polish Cup Final Four, which will be held next weekend in Krakow, where the same matchups will repeat.

Held on Saturday, the semifinals will have Jastrzębski Węgiel meeting Lublin and Projekt Warsaw facing Aluron. The winners will meet in Sunday’s gold medal match.
