Slovenia (SLO) vs. Argentina (ARG) men - Pool 5 - Preliminary Phase #16802071

Gheorghe Cretu

Gheorghe Cretu was named as the new head coach of the Serbian men’s national volleyball team to take over from Igor Kolakovic. The 56-year-old Romanian is set to lead Serbia in their Volleyball Nations League 2025 campaign, as well as at September’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2025 to be held in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. Serbia are currently number 10 in the FIVB World Ranking.

“First of all, it is a great honour for me to be the coach of the Serbian national team! Being a coach in such a sports country as Serbia is really very special for me, but I would say it would also be special for every coach in the world,” Cretu told the Volleyball Federation of Serbia. “I know the players very well. At this level, we are all familiar with the details of each team. If my memory serves me correctly, in the last two years I played four times against Serbia (as the coach of Slovenia). I admit I know the younger volleyballers less well, but I will do my best to get to know them better. My plan is to include some new players in the team, in certain positions, and gradually integrate them into the squad. Together with the more experienced players we will find the right way. I know this is a big challenge, but that's exactly why I accepted it!”

Until recently, Gheorghe Cretu head coached the men’s national team of Slovenia, steering them to the semifinals of the 2022 World Championship and a historic fourth place, to the semifinals of VNL 2024, to the bronze medals at the 2023 CEV Volleyball European Championship, and to their first appearance at the Olympic Games. At Paris 2024, Slovenia reached the quarterfinals.

Cretu is also at the helm of the club team of PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow in the Polish PlusLiga, where he works with Serbian internationals Miran Kujundzic and Pavle Peric.

The former middle blocker began his coaching career in 1997 guiding Austrian club teams. Later on in his club journey, he was also at the helm of teams from Belgium, Italy, Poland, Qatar and Russia, collecting national-level trophies and medals in most of these countries. Cretu’s highest achievement as a club coach was the golden treble in the 2021-2022 season, when he drove Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle to the CEV Champions League crown, the Polish championship title and the Poland Cup trophy. That year, he was honoured by the European Volleyball Confederation as the 2022 CEV Men’s Volleyball Team Coach of the Year.

The first national team Cretu headed in his coaching career was that of his native Romania in 2007 and 2008. Later on, he head coached Estonia from 2014 to 2019, winning the CEV Volleyball European League in 2016 and in 2018, and an FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup bronze in 2018. In Estonia, he was named Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018.
