The seventh leg of the second round of the regular season of the 2024-2025 Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà had a major impact in the race to remain in the Italian elite next season as three of the five teams that teams that fight to avoid relegation secured huge wins.

Bartoccini-Mc Restauri Perugia produced their most impactful result of the season so far on Sunday, upsetting Igor Gorgonzola Novara, while Honda Olivero Cuneo topped a direct opponent in Il Bisonte Firenze and Cda Volley Talmassons Fvg got three important points against Wash4Green Pinerolo.

With the victories, Perugia and Cuneo both got to 16 points and are now three points clear of SMI Roma Volley and Talmassons, which have 13 and would go down if the season ended now. With 15 points, Firenze are also severely threatened by relegation.

Back in the Italian elite this season after winning the country’s second division in 2023-2024, Perugia took down one of the country’s heavyweights, beating Novara 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 19-25, 20-25, 16-14) in a dramatic five-set battle held in front of their home fans.

The second-best scorer in the Lega Femminile, Hungarian opposite Anett Németh had a fantastic match for Perugia, leading the team with an impressive 27 points (26 kills, one block). Gaia Traballi tallied 19, two more than fellow outside hitter Beatrice Gardini.

“We’re really excited to have defeated such a strong opponent,” Traballi reacted. “After we were up 2-0, we really wanted to take all three points, but I couldn’t be any happier with our team.”

Novara got 23 points (22 kills, one block) from Russian opposite Tatiana Tolok and another 19 (14 kills, four blocks, one ace) from Italian national team middle blocker Sara Bonifacio.

The upset cost Novara the third place in the standings as the team got just one point in the match, getting to 42, and was passed by Numia Vero Volley Milano, who downed Eutorek Uyba Busto Arsizio 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-16) on the road and reached 44 points.

‘Anas’ push Cuneo to beat Firenze

Also on Sunday, Cuneo, who ten days ago had upset Novara, took another major step to avoid relegation by coming back twice to beat Firenze 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16, 15-9) on the road.

20-year-old Russian outside hitter Anastasiia Kapralova led the team’s offense with 21 points (18 kills, three blocks), followed by American middle blocker Anna Dodson, who produced 16 (ten kills, six blocks), and Serbian veteran opposite Ana Bjelica, who added another 15, all in kills.

“Losing to Roma last week really hurt us, so we worked very hard during the week to show what we’re about tonight,” Colombian outside hitter Margarita Martínez commented. “We knew this was an important match and we were all ready for it. We played really well and this victory gives us a good push to avoid relegation.”

Opposite Adhuoljok Malual led Firenze with 21 points (18 kills, three blocks), two more than Dutch middle blocker Indy Baijens, who produced 19 (15 kills, four blocks) in her first match with the team.

Also fighting to avoid relegation, Talmassons remain at the bottom of the standings, but the three points earned with their 3-0 (25-13, 29-27, 25-21) home win over Pinerolo on Saturday keep them very much alive.

They were also helped by Roma’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-14) road loss to Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia on Sunday as the team from the country’s capital continued with the same 13 points they now have.

The top two teams in the Italian League had solid weekends, with league leaders Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano sweeping Reale Mutua Fenera Chieri ’76 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-17) at home, while second-placed Savino Del Bene Scandicci needed four sets to overcome Bergamo 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 37-35, 25-23) on the road.
