Fresh from winning their Coppa Italia A1 Frecciarossa quarterfinal duels last weekend, Igor Gorgonzola Novara and Numia Vero Volley Milano are set to meet in a critical 2024-2025 Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà match on Sunday.

Separated by just two points in the standings, the Italian giants will clash in the last match of the weekend, set to start at 20:30 local time (19:30 GMT), in the third leg of the second round of the Italian League regular season.

Novara are currently in third place with 33 points (12 wins, three losses) and need only to win at least two sets to end the weekend above Milano, who have 31 (11 wins, three losses). The victory would bring additional benefits to both sides as while Novara could even catch Savino Del Bene Scandicci (36 points) for second place, Milano, who have one game in hand, could gain ground and be within striking range to the second-placed team.

The home team in this weekend’s encounter, Novara will enter the court in a seven-match winning streak, which includes duels in the Italian League, the Coppa Italia and the CEV Cup. The team’s top scorer with 221 points, Japanese outside hitter Mayu Ishikawa has been one of Novara’s key players in the season.

Milano struggled with back-to-back losses in the FIVB Women’s Club World Championship earlier this month, but won their last match in China to take bronze in the event and returned to national competition with victories in the Lega Femminile and the Coppa Italia.

The second-best blocker in the Italian League with 53 points, Italian national team captain and middle blocker Anna Danesi has been one of the team’s standouts this season.

The duel between the teams has happened 23 times in the Italian League so far, with Novara taking the win in 13 of those occasions. Their five-set victory in the first round of the regular season, in October, was the second straight for the team and the third in the last five meetings.

Conegliano face Roma

League leaders and defending champions Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano will try to secure their 15th victory in the Lega Femminile this season on Sunday, when they play at home against SMI Roma Volley at 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT). The Panthers have 42 points and are clear at the top of the standings.

Second-placed Scandicci, who have 36, will be on the road on Saturday, facing Bartoccini-MC Restauri Perugia, at 20:30 local time (19:30 GMT).
