2024 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship bronze medalists Numia Vero Volley Milano secured their fifth-straight victory in the 2024-2025 Lega Volley Femminile Serie A1 Tigotà on Wednesday and continued to move up in the standings.

Three days after passing Igor Gorgonzola Novara for third place, the team returned to action in a postponed match of the first leg of the second round of the regular season and recovered from a first-set loss to beat Wash4Green Pinerolo 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17) at home.

The three points earned with the victory weren’t enough to push the team up to second place, but significantly shortened the distance between them and Savino Del Bene Scandicci from four points to just one (48 to 47). Milano are also now safer in third place, having five points more than Novara, who are fourth with 42.

“This victory gave us very important points as we’re now very close to Scandicci and also more distant to Novara,” said Belgian middle blocker Laura Heyrman. “We feel that our game is improving after every match and that gives us more confidence for the next ones.”

With 11 points (nine kills, two blocks), Heyrman was Milano’s third-best scorer in the match, behind star opposite Paola Egonu, who produced 24 (21 kills, two blocks, one ace), and French outside hitter Héléna Cazaute, who added 19, with 16 kills and three blocks. French libero Juliette Gelin received the match’s MVP award.

Pinerolo had two veterans as their leading scorers as Polish opposite Malwina Smarzek led the team with 14 points (13 kills, one block), followed by Italian outside hitter Indre Sorokaite, who registered 13 (12 kills, one ace).

With the defeat, Pinerolo missed an opportunity to get closer to securing a spot in the playoffs. They are ninth, with 21 points, and trail Megabox Ondulati Savio Vallefoglia by eight.

Conegliano get 20th victory

Also on Wednesday, reigning world champions Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano continued their undefeated campaign in the Italian League, amassing their 20th victory in the season and getting to 60 points in the standings. The Panthers were on the road against Eurotek Uyba Busto Arsizio, but didn’t give their opponents a chance, winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-19).

Using a mixed lineup, Conegliano got 15 points (13 kills, one block, one ace) from Chinese star outside hitter Zhu Ting and another 14 (12 kills, two aces) from 18-year-old opposite Merit Adigwe.

“I’m happy with our performance,” Adigwe reflected. “We made some mistakes but managed to dominate the game in the key moments and get the win against a team that’s doing very well. I feel like I’ve been learning a lot every day and I have to thank my teammates, who always help me.”

Busto are seventh in the Lega Femminile, with 32 points, and are strongly positioned to qualify to the playoffs with just six more regular season matches to be played.
