Medal winners at the 2024 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship, Prosecco Doc Imoco Conegliano and Numia Vero Volley Milano will meet on Sunday with a trophy on the line as they are the finalists of the 47th edition of the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa.

The two teams secured victories on Saturday, the first day of the tournament’s Final Four in Bologna, with Conegliano eliminating Igor Gorgonzola Novara and Milano topping Savino Del Bene Scandicci in the semifinals.

Set to start at 15:20 local time (14:20 GMT) at the Unipol Arena, the Coppa Italia final will mark the ninth time the two teams met with a title on the line in the last four years. In the period, the rivals met in the finals of two editions of the Lega Femminile (2021-2022, 2022-2023), the Coppa Italia (2022-2023, 2023-2024) and the Supercoppa (2023, 2024), besides one of the European Champions League (2023-2024) and the Courmayeur Cup (2024), with Conegliano prevailing every time.

The Panthers have six Coppa Italia titles (2016-2017, 2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, 2023-2024) and could become the first team to get to seven victories, overcoming Bergamo and Ravenna. Milano, on the other hand, are looking for their first triumph in the event and have the silver medals won in the last two seasons as their best results.

Milano had to do more to secure their spot in Sunday’s gold medal match in Bologna as they needed all five sets to overcome Scandicci 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12) in the semifinals.

The match had an exciting battle between the two opposites that helped Italy take gold at the Paris Olympics last year. They produced 30 points each, with Paola Egonu registering 28 kills and two blocks for Milano and Ekaterina Antropova tallying 26 kills, three blocks and one ace for Scandicci.

After Egonu, fellow Olympic champions Miriam Sylla, with 14 points (11 kills, two blocks, one ace), and Anna Danesi, with 11 (seven kills, four blocks), were also key players for Milano.

“This was the first time we managed to win a match against one of the top teams in the country this season and we’re happy for it,” Danesi, the match’s MVP, reacted. “I thought we could have done better in the second set, but I’m happy about how we reacted. We’ll play for the title tomorrow and, against Conegliano, it’s always going to be a challenge.”

Scandicci had in Belgian outside hitter Britt Herbots and middle blocker Linda Nwakalor their second-best scorers, with 14 points each.

Conegliano sweep Novara

In the other semifinal, Conegliano showed the excellent form that has kept them undefeated in Italian volleyball this season to sweep Novara, prevailing 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-23).

Swedish star opposite Isabelle Haak led Conegliano with 15 points (14 kills, one block), one more than Olympic champion middle blocker Sarah Fahr, who notched 14 (nine kills, five blocks), and took home the MVP award.

“I think that we struggled a little bit more than we should to put the ball down,” said middle blocker Marian Lubian. “I was happy to help, like the other players who came off the bench. These elimination matches are always hard and both teams want to advance.”

Novara had the match’s top scorer in Russian outside hitter Tatiana Tolok, who left the court with 17 points, all in kills. American opposite Taylor Mims came next, delivering ten points (eight kills, two blocks) off the bench.
