Ciudad Voley spoiled UPCN San Juan’s party as the Buenos Aires-based club defeated the eight-time national champions to secure the title of the 2021 Argentinean Supercup on Thursday. The tournament marked the opening of UPCN’s new 3,500-seat stadium in San Juan.

Ciudad were dominant in the final, taking UPCN down in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-22) to secure their first Supercup title. The team also got revenge from the final of the last edition of the Argentinean League, which saw UPCN triumph over Ciudad to take the title.

The team led by Hernan Ferraro, who coached the Argentinean women’s national team at the Tokyo Olympics, counted on their duo of Chilean outside hitters Vicente Parraguirre and Dusan Bonacic to dominate the match. A new signing for Ciudad this season, the 27-year-old Parraguirre scored a match-high 24 points while team captain Bonacic tallied ten.

UPCN’s outside hitters also had a good night as former Argentinean national team player Brian Melgarejo delivered 15 points while Manuel Armoa, who made it on to the Dream Team of this year’s FIVB Men’s U21 World Championship, added 12.

The tournament also served as UPCN’s main preparation for this year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, which will take place in Betim, Brazil, from December 7-11. The Argentinean club, which won bronze medals in the 2014 and 2015 editions of the tournament, will compete against two clubs from Brazil (Sada Cruzeiro and FUNVIC - Fundação Universitária Vida Cristã), two clubs from Italy (Trentino Itas and Cucine Lube Civitanova) and one from Iran (Sirjan Foolad.

Union Vecinal de Trinidad (UVT) finished third in the Argentinean Supercup after their 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21) victory over Obras de San Juan.
