Defending champions Omaha Supernovas were the only team to secure two victories in the opening weekend of the 2025 American Women’s Pro Volleyball Federation league.

After seven matches were held from Thursday to Sunday in the first round of the league’s second season, the Supernovas appear alone at the top of the standings, paving the way for another strong campaign.

The defending champions stated their campaign at home on Friday in Nebraska against the Atlanta Vibe in a match that set a new attendance record for professional volleyball matches in the country, with 13,486 fans on the stands.

Pushed by their home supporters and propelled by a 22-point performance by outside hitter Brooke Nuneviller, the Supernovas turned a historic night, which saw the team raise the banner for their 2024 title, into a festive one, beating the Vibe 3-2 (22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13) to start their campaign on the right foot.

Two days later, the Supernovas went on the road to face the Grand Rapids Rise and secured another victory, prevailing 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22). This time, outside hitter Reagan Cooper was the team’s leading scorer with 18 points, two more than Nuneviller.

“We showed that we like to fight, we battled on the road and that’s a great win,” said head coach Laura ‘Bird’ Kuhn. “We are going to have many other challenges throughout the season but to have finished this match 3-0 on the road was huge.”

Rookies Ignite also undefeated

A new team in the Pro Volleyball Federation league in 2025, the Indy Ignite couldn’t have asked for a better debut in the league as they came from behind to top the Orlando Valkyries 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21) on Saturday in front of their home fans, in their only match of the weekend.

With 27 and 22 points scored respectively, outside hitter Leketor Member-Meneh and opposite Azhani Tealer were the catalysts in the team’s historic triumph.

“It was such an incredible environment,” said setter Sydney Hilley. “Seeing the crowd, I think we got a little nervous. We wanted to really show them some Indy Ignite volleyball, so that first set was a lot of nerves. But I’m so proud of the way we came back. It was just so cool to be part of this environment and I’m so proud of this team for coming back after that first set.”

The Vibe, the Valkyries, the San Diego Mojo and the Vegas Thrill all played two matches over the weekend, getting a win and a loss. The Columbus Fury, who dropped their only match, and the Rise, who lost twice, are the only teams that will still be looking for their first victories after the opening week.

The second week of action in the Pro Volleyball Federation League will feature eight matches from Thursday to Sunday.
