The home fans at the women’s Madrid Futures were treated to an all-Spanish final on Sunday. The new pairing of 20-year-old Sofia Izuzquiza and 24-year-old Paris 2024 Olympian Tania Moreno decorated the team’s Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour debut with gold, leaving compatriots Belen Carro & Paula Soria with silver. Denmark’s Clara Windeleff & Astrid Elisabeth Mellmolle prevented an all-Spanish podium by beating Ana Vergara & Sofia Gonzalez for the bronze.

Top-seeded Izuzquiza & Tania won both of their pool matches in third-set tie-breakers, but then swept all three of their remaining games on the road to Madrid Futures gold in straight sets. In the semifinals, they put together a 2-0 (22-20, 21-13) win over Windeleff & Mellmolle and followed up with a 2-0 (21-19, 21-14) victory over compatriots Carro & Paula to triumph on top of the podium at their very first Beach Pro Tour appearance together.

Carro, a former teammate of Tania Moreno, and Paula, another Paris 2024 Olympian, reached the Madrid final without dropping a single set. Their four-match winning streak was crowned with a 2-0 (21-11, 21-15) sweep of the semifinal against fellow Spaniards Vergara & Gonzalez. Carro & Paula picked up their second Beach Pro Tour medal, after the 2025 Valencia Futures silver. During their first period together from 2018 to 2021, they also had two silvers in addition to one gold on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.

It was Mellmolle’s only second appearance on the Beach Pro Tour. The bronze she earned with Windeleff in the Spanish capital was the first Beach Pro Tour medal for either of them. The Danish duo started their Madrid campaign from the qualifications and reached the semifinals on a run of five consecutive victories, losing only a set along the way. They bounced back from their first defeat of the tournament with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-11) shutout of Vergara & Gonzalez in the third-place game.

28 women’s duos representing 17 different federations took part in last week’s Madrid Futures.

The next Futures stop on the Beach Pro Tour will be held in Apeldoorn, Netherlands from May 21 to 24.
